Mount Cook Salmon is situated in the Southern Lakes area of the South Island of New Zealand at an altitude of 600 metres. The actual farm is in a hydro canal used for power generation. These continually flowing canals are fed directly from mountain lakes fed in turn by glaciers and alpine rain. There is only alpine wilderness between the salmon farm and the mountains.
Why is this good?
The sheer isolation means that the water quality is pristine, with no agricultural or environmental pollution. It is as "clean & green" as is possible. Because of this, there are no diseases or bacterial and viral problems common to elsewhere in the salmon farming world. Water temperature is ideally suited to salmon culture ranging seasonably from 6 to 16 degrees Celsius.
