The Mount Cook Salmon farm is situated in hydro canals constructed by the New Zealand Government for power generation. These canals, fed directly from mountain lakes, flow at some 130 cumecs (cubic meters per second) or about 7.8 million liters per minute. Their high flow rate reduces any buildup of waste products maintaining pristine water quality.
Apart from the water flow, there is only high alpine wilderness between the salmon farm and the mountains. The sheer isolation means the water is pristine, with no external agricultural or environmental pollution. Cleaner water cannot be found anywhere in the world.
Water temperature is ideally suited to salmon culture ranging seasonably from 6 to 16 degrees Celsius |
